Once this is done, the Mac will return to the macOS Utility startup window. This can take a few minutes, depending on the speed of the USB port and the USB stick. The Mac will now boot from the installer on the USB stick. I don't know if IDENTICAL iOS stuff would be cached, but iOS updates to different devices are different because of Content Thinning and optimization targeting the precise CPU, so, at least for now, it's not really an iOS updates relevant service. Download macOS Catalina (or another version). (But unfortunately only macOS stuff seems to be cached. The first year of Content Caching was definitely somewhat iffy, but for the past year it has been very robust in my experience. The first one will go out to internet, but all subsequent machines updated will pull the update from this server. You could also use a secondary internal partition. Now what SHOULD happen is that updates will pass through the content caching server and be kept there. Use the createinstallmedia command in Terminal Mount your USB flash drive or other volume. You can fiddle with the details if you want, but as usual the Apple defaults are probably good enough until you know what you are doing. Go to System Preferences/Sharing and choose the Content Caching item (last in the list). If your primary goal is just to download updates faster/not use up your limited data budget, and you have multiple Macs (otherwise why do you care, anyway) you can take advantage of macOS Content Caching.Ĭhoose ONE of your Macs as the Content Cacher (ideally the one that is most often awake). PSA: for MOST use cases there is now a much easier solution.
